Roland Hayes School, the former Heath School, changed its name in November of 2023. The school building has been around for more than 100 years and is one of the smaller elementary schools in Brookline both by footprint and student enrollment.
Children on both sides of Route 9 attend the Hayes School, which encompasses the very affluent Heath Street neighborhood where Pine Manor College resides. This area, on the South Side of Route 9, is perhaps the most beautiful part of Brookline and is home to some elegant mansions.
Hayes sits on the North side of Route 9. There are a number of picturesque streets with gorgeous single-family homes made of stucco, clapboard, and brick. These homes, and the area around Hayes in general, have more land than most homes in North Brookline. This is an area of town where you can find homes with backyards.
The front of Hayes School is located on Eliot Street and the back is on Reservoir Road. The school is just off of Route 9 and Dean Road, and serves a portion of Chestnut Hill neighborhoods. Eliot Street is a peaceful, tree-lined street with some beautiful single family homes. The streets that intersect with Eliot Street are equally pretty and most are occupied by single family homeowners who live in solid, brick homes. However, there are also a number of condos on Ackers Ave and Boylston Street which run perpendicular to Eliot Street, and some on Chestnut Hill Avenue which runs parallel to Eliot Street.
Hayes School is also across the street from Warren (a.k.a Eliot) Playground, one of the largest parks in Brookline with three tennis courts, eight basketball hoops, two baseball fields, and a playground with play structures for little kids.
In short, Hayes School is in a very desirable part of Brookline to live in. The school is a roughly 10 minute walk to the MBTA’s D-Line Reservoir Station in Cleveland Circle and a few minutes more to the D-Line stop in Chestnut Hill. The D-Line runs from Newton to Boston making stops along the way. The closest public transportation to Heath itself is either the 60 Bus that runs from Kenmore Square in Boston to the Chestnut Hill Mall making stops at the Longwood Medical Area and along Route 9, or the 51 Bus that originates at Reservoir Station and makes stops along Chestnut Hill Avenue en route to Forest Hills. If you need to get to Cambridge by public transportation, the 86 Bus, which also originates at Reservoir Station, is another option. It goes through Watertown and makes stops at Harvard University and more before ending at Sullivan Square in Charlestown.
