Brookline has one public high school for its progressive 62,822 person community and employs 192 full time educators.
Brookline High School (BHS) serves a diverse community of some 2,100 students. Regular school hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:15 AM - 3:00 PM, and Wednesday from 8:15 AM - 2:16 PM unless it's a four day week, in which case the end of school hour for one day varies.
The high school reflects the high value the town holds for education. BHS has a tradition of excellence and innovation, which has earned a national reputation. The student body is diverse in terms of race, nationality, culture, and socio-economic strata. Students come from over 69 countries and speak 44 different languages.
Brookline has spent considerable money renovating its high school. A brand new building for freshmen, located on the corner of Cypress and Tappan Street, opened in 2022. This followed improvements to the Tappan Gym and STEM building. In addition, Cypress Field and Playground was demolished, new grass planted, and a new playground for children was opened in the summer of 2022.
Brookline High School is centrally located, on the North side of Route 9, close to Brookline Village, parts of Fisher Hill, Washington Square, and the Lincoln and Pierce Schools. Many kids from North Brookline walk to the high school while kids from South Brookline have the option to take a bus. The cost of the bus was $400 for the 2024-25 school year. Some kids take the MBTA D Line to the Brookline Hills Stop, which is basically on the campus of the high school (the train literally runs behind two of its buildings and under the new freshman building).
Brookline High School has a number of unique programs and initiatives for students to take advantage of as well as a huge number of clubs and activities. And let's not forget about the school newspaper, The Cypress!
