Newton has 15 public elementary schools that teach kindergarten through fifth grade (K-5). Most children attend their neighborhood school. The City has mapped Newton’s elementary school districts. Some neighborhoods fall into a “buffer zone” which simply means a child may attend more than one school.
Some 4,809 students attend the 15 elementary schools in 2024-25, and the average class size is 18.8.
Elementary school hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:10 AM - 2:50 PM and Wednesday, 8:10 AM - 12:20 PM. Each school has an extended day program that is not affiliated with the school, and every school offers an early morning dropoff program that runs from 7:20 AM - 8:10 AM. Parents have the option of enrolling children in the early morning dropoff program one to five days and the cost varies depending on the number of days a child is enrolled but ranges from roughly $400 per year for one day to $2,100 for all five days.
While some students walk to school, others take the bus, which is free for students in grades K-5. The list of bus stops is large with buses transporting students to 14 of the 15 elementary schools. There are no buses to Lincoln-Eliot. View the bus stops and route.
Newton elementary schools offer a number of extracurricular activities in Fine Arts including All City Music Ensembles, and participation in an instrumental music program for 4th and 5th graders. These fee-based programs provide students an opportunity to enroll in group lessons on band and string instruments at their school.
